The Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) recently celebrated its 5th Foundation year with a lively slew of activities done in conjunction with its Math and Science Week, showcasing the students’ smarts and skills in these subjects as well as in sports and other extracurricular interests. The theme of the celebration is “Malayan@5: Exploring Life in the Light of the Wandering Mind.”

MHSS principal Dr. Efren B. Mateo in his opening speech reiterated the important responsibility of the school in providing intensified learning in mathematics and science subjects among its students. “Malayan High School [of Science] will continuously strive to elevate its standards and provide children with education that will have a significant impact in their future lives and in the life of our country,” he said.

The week-long programs, kicked off by a creation-themed parade, consisted of film viewing, lectures, and open forum touching on chemical engineering and biotechnology, hosted by Dr. Lemuel L. Tayo of the School of Chemical Engineer and Chemistry of Mapúa Institute of Technology. MHSS also turned its second floor into an exhibit area featuring research papers and science experiments done by its students.

The school also hosted an interschool Whiz Bee, where grade 5 and 6 pupils from neighboring elementary schools were pitted against each other in math and science. The high school students meanwhile vied for honor and recognition amongst themselves in a similar math and science contest. In addition, selected fourth year students hosted science and math symposia while their counter parts in the lower years conducted science and math fora.

Other notable activities during the celebration comprised of the mental and physical challenges of an Amazing Race-styled contest, basketball friendship game between MHSS and Angelicum College Quezon City, and the Science Idol, a fashion-show-cum-talent contest.

The Malayan High School of Science is run by Malayan Colleges, Inc. The same group that manages Mapúa Institute of Technology (Intramuros and Makati) and Malayan Colleges Laguna.
