Mapúa Institute of Technology, the mother school of Malayan High School of Science, is set to offer senior high school (SHS) starting academic year 2016-2017.

Mapúa President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea said that Mapua will offer all strands in the Academic Track and that the curricula will be strongly aligned with Mapúa’s curricula, which are outcomes-based and learner-centered. This is pursuant to the Department of Education’s mandate that the SHS curricula should be designed to ensure that the graduates in the academic track will be college-ready.

“As we open our doors to Grades 11 and 12, the same high-quality education standard that Mapúa is known for will be employed, which ensures world-class education and advantage in admission to tertiary level institutions,” said Dr. Vea.

The four strands under the Academic Track that Mapua SHS will be offering are: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Strand (STEM); Accountancy, Business and Management Strand (ABM); Humanities and Social Sciences Strand (HUMSS); and General Academic Strand (GAS).

Dr. Vea further added that studying at Mapúa SHS will give the students foot-in-the-door advantage in the competitive admissions process into the colleges of Mapúa. They may choose to pursue any of the Mapúa academic degree programs, which are harmonized with the four SHS academic strands.

Under the STEM, possible college undergraduate programs are Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Chemistry, Geology, Architecture, Management Science and Engineering; under the ABM, students may venture to Accountancy, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, and Hotel and Restaurant Management; under the HUMSS, students may take Psychology, Technical Communication, and Education Technology in college; and under the GAS, they may choose to major in Digital Art Cinema, Interior Design, or Multimedia Arts and Sciences.

Students with at least 85% general weighted average and final grades in Science, English and Mathematics will be exempted from taking the admission exam. The student’s entrance examination will also be waived if he finished Grade 10 at Malayan High School of Science, which is not offering senior high school.

Mapúa also offers integrated BS/MS programs that will give students an MS degree in about the same amount of time that will give them a BS degree in other schools. This is possible because of Mapúa’s quarter system at the college level.

“With the offering of the SHS, we guarantee that we will continue to uphold Mapúa’s tradition of excellence and forward-looking approach to development. In Mapúa SHS, the students will gain strong background and competitive skills, as well as professional readiness and growth,” said Engr. Rosette Eira E. Camus, dean of Admissions and International Programs.

Mapúa SHS will have two semesters, which will start in July and December. Each semester will have 20 weeks. For more information on Mapúa SHS admissions, please click here.
