Malayan Science students prevail in Math competition

All of the four teams of the MaSciTech Math Wizards of Malayan High School of Science bested 32 students from 8 different schools in the DepEd-Metrobank-MTAP Mathematics Competition.

The champion students were Allyza Marie Mabutol, Eunbin Cho, Audrey Gabrielle Tan, Christeen Faith Lim, Mary Margareth Celline Pablo, Paul Andre Nahiwan, Ron Jerome Simbulan, Daniel Fabellon, Francis Gabriel Almario, Peter Bryan Sy, James David Abiog, Rey Adrian Vince Yao, Peter Kwak, Mark Christopher Sy, and Ken Gil Romero. All the four teams got the championship title in the division level of the contest.

Aside from the team feats, MHSS students also shined in individual events. Grade 7 Audrey Gabrielle Tan won second place for the division and sectoral levels; Grade 8 Francis Almario clinched the first place in the division level. Eunbin Cho from Grade 8 won as second place in the division level and Peter Kwak from Grade 9 secured the first place for the division level. Fourth year Faith Lim placed first in the division level, and Allysa Mabutol, also a fourth year, as second place in the division level.

Before the competition, the students went on intense training under the auspices of advisers Kevin Emmanuel Deniega, Djoahna Giron, Patrick Jhiel Ilog, and Christian Bernard Roxas.

Malayan Science has always put premium on its Mathematics and Science courses. In fact, the school drilled additional Math and Science subjects to the participants of the competition for a year.

“MHSS offered training programs for both Math and Science, and this enhanced the competency and skills of the students,” said Deniega, one of the advisers.

For students eyeing for feats in Math competitions, the winners have some pieces of advice: “Just keep on practicing and never give up,” says Mark Sy.

“Be passionate in Math and be patient,” according to James Abiog.

Learning Mathematics is probably frustrating for most students. But this subject, according to Math teachers, teaches virtue by the apparent difficulty of its drills and exercises.

The MaSciTech Math wizards share their thoughts on the virtues learning Math.

“The greatest achievement always starts with a lot of difficulties,” Margareth Pablo opines. For Audrey Gabrielle Tan, “Nothing grows without hard work.”

The twelve Mathematicians revealed why they enjoy Math as a subject. “Math is fun and challenging,” Eunbin Cho said, “since it focuses on analyzing and application rather than simply memorizing facts,” add Francis Almario.

DepEd-Metrobank MTAP Competition is a yearly mathematics competition for both private and public schools in the Philippines. The students received Certificates of Merit as award.
