MHSS Robotics Team: First Placer in APC ROBO CUP 2009

The Malayan High School of Science Robotics Team garnered First Place in the recently concluded APC Robo Cup 2009 elimination round for Area 1 ( Manila, Makati and Mandaluyong) held at the Asia Pacific College (APC) on September 4, 2009.

Robo Cup 2009 is sponsored by the Asia Pacific College, Magallanes, Makati City. According to the school, the “Robo Cup is a special program designed to create awareness and appreciation of the latest trends in Philippine robotics. The Robo Cup aims to instill in the students a foundation in mathematics and science and technology through hands-on experience.”

A week before the contest, the participants underwent a four-hour training and orientation on the ES3-IROBO kit. Each team were provided with two-sets of kit and were instructed to build and design a robot that can efficiently traverse a technical obstacle course within the shortest possible time.

Results of the contest showed that the robot of the MHSS Robotics Team registered a winning time of 1 minute and 12 seconds. Second place went to Makati City Science High School (4 minutes, 37 seconds) and third place, Lourdes School of Mandaluyong City (over 19 minutes).

Aside from winning the obstacle course contest, the team also garnered the award: Most Attractive Robot Design. For their outstanding performance, the Malayan team received plaques of recognition plus a cash prize of PhP 5,000.

The members of the robotics team are Dustin Marcelo, Piere Luya, Ingrid Ignacio, Kathleen Ching, Camilla Bautista, Anya Canlas, Ira Avila, Ryan Simbulan, Marco Rodriguez, and Tristan Pascual. The coaches are Engr. Roel John Judilla, robotics teacher and Mr. Dhonny Bacuyag, physics teacher.
