MHSS holds 3rd MalayamPatimpalak; Chiang Kai Shek defends sabayang pagbigkas win

Chiang Kai Shek College, first place in the 2013 MalayamPatimpalak Malikhaing Sabayang Pagbasa.
In celebration of the Buwan ng Wika, Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) held its third MalayamPatimpalak, an annual competition promoting the use of the Filipino language in the development of the youth's communication skills.
This year, delegates from the schools of Chiang Kai Shek College, Jacinto Zamora Elementary School, and newcomer Metropolitan Academy, in colorful Filipiniana and ethnic costumes, vied in the different contests of dagliang talumpati (impromptu speaking), paskilang haiku at tanaga (haiku and tanaga poster-making), and malikhaing sabayang pagbasa (creative group poetry reading).
Articulate and quick-witted Janbrey Espia won the first prize in dagliang talumpati for Metropolitan Academy of Manila for his take on this year's event's theme "Wika natin, ang tuwid na landas."
"I am surprised that I won the contest given the limited time of preparation I had and the brilliance of the other contenders. Nevertheless, I am happy that I won. Apart from that, I learned from this competition that it is really important to continuously learn about new things," said Espia in Filipino.
Meanwhile, Jacinto Zamora Elementary School's LJ Kemsy Pacheco's artistic painting depiction of the same theme won the gold in paskilang haiku at tanaga.
Chiang Kai Shek College's lively presentation of Pat V. Villafuerte's Ako'y Wika in malikhaing sabayang pagbasa has enabled it to land the first place for second consecutive year.
"We are so happy that we won. It was our aim and we really prepared for this," said adviser Nerissa Dela Cruz.

For MHSS principal Dr. Efren B. Mateo, in its three years, the aim of MalayamPatimpalak has remained the same – to promote the use of the Filipino language in developing the youth's communication skills, which is also a way to shape their Filipino identity.
"The Malayan education is not only about excellence in science, technology, and mathematics. It is about rearing and molding the Filipino youth holistically to become globally competitive. It is also important to keep in mind the good characteristics inherent to us Filipinos, to highlight them, and to enrich them. Success and excellence always start with the awareness of self. And this is what we are celebrating with MalayamPatimpalak: our Filipino identity," concluded Dr. Mateo.
