Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Twenty-two students from Malayan High School of Science made it to the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG), Philippines’ excellence program in mathematics. These students from all year levels passed a rigid test in arithmetic, number theory, geometry, and algebra conducted on July 25, 2009 at St. Stephen High School, Sta. Cruz, Manila; thus, qualified them to the 2009-2010 Mathematics Challenge of the Filipino Kids Training Program (MCFKTP). They shall join a pool of trainees from other schools all over the Philippines who shall undergo a rigorous training in mathematics. The performance of these students during the training program shall be the basis to select those who shall represent the country in the different international mathematics Olympiads. This year, two international mathematics competitions will be hosted by the Philippines: 2009 Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Competitions and 2009 Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad at Iloilo City in November 2 and December 3, respectively.

It is worth to mention that just this August, the country earned the first gold medal in eight years in the 8 th China Girls’ Mathematics Olympiad. Carmela Antoinette Lao, a third year high school student from a private school in Manila, and who was under the tutelage of the MTG, bagged the coveted prize; thus, earning accolade not only for her school but for the country as well.
