MHSS student-athletes to represent NCR in Palarong Pambansa 2016

MHSS student-athletes will join the NCR basketball team who will represent the region in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa.

After clinching the championship title in Palarong National Capital Region (NCR), students of Malayan High School of Science (MHSS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mapúa Institute of Technology, gear up for the 59th Palarong Pambansa to be held from April 10 to 18 at the Albay Sports and Tourism Complex, Albay Province.

MHSS student-athletes Michael Enriquez, Romuel Junsay, Warren Bonifacio, Clint Escamis, Robbie Caso, Justin Velvez, Joaquin Garcia, and Florencio Serrano will form a large part of the NCR basketball team that will compete in the secondary level of the upcoming Palarong Pambansa.

The secondary level highlights a total of 21 regular and demonstration games including basketball, football, and swimming, among others.

Also battling it out in the athletic event is swimmer Jexter Chua, who was a medalist at the recently concluded Palarong NCR. The student-athletes have been undergoing a series of trainings as part of their preparation.

More than the chance of bringing pride to the school, though, MHSS sees this competition as a way to shape the students’ values.

“The competition will surely make the students adjusted to different levels of play, as they get to learn the values of teamwork and sacrifice,” said MHSS Administrative Officer Jan Erwin Macam.

This year’s multi-sporting event marks MHSS’ fresh entry to the Palarong Pambansa level. Palarong Pambansa is an annual national meet, which started in 1948, gathering athletic associations from the country’s 18 regions. The associations will compete in various sporting events and discipline.

Envisioned to be a global center of excellence in secondary education, MHSS educates its students to have a very strong foundation in the natural sciences and mathematics, along with excellent communication skills, a deep appreciation of today’s most important technologies, an analytical mind, and a creative, innovative spirit. The school also supports athletics as part of its curriculum, resulting in impressive sporting achievements and further building the students’ character.
