Accountability and Responsibility

3. Prompt and regular attendance in all classes, subject to the following guidelines:
   • Absences should not exceed the 20% maximum days allowed by the DepEd. In all cases of absences, a written explanation must be presented to the Guidance Officer for the issuance of an admission slip, which is to be presented to the teachers in whose classes the student had been absent. An excused absence does not exempt the student from complying with the assigned work during his absence.
   • A student is marked late if he enters the classroom five (5) minutes after the scheduled start of class. Three (3) instances of tardiness are equivalent to one absence. This rule also applies during flag ceremony and other official school activities.
   • A student is considered to have cut a class if he is known to be in campus but is not in the classroom during the class period. If a student is in the campus but cannot be in class because of valid reasons such as sickness or attendance in official school activities, he must get a certification from the proper school authorities.
   • A student may leave the campus during class hours only upon presentation of an exit pass issued and duly signed by any of the following:
     1. Homeroom adviser or, in case of illness, the attending nurse or any faculty member
     2. Year level coordinator
     3. Guidance/admissions officer
     4. Principal
4. Wearing of Complete Uniform

   The complete school uniform should be worn at all times within the school premises on school days and on other days when there is an official function. The prescribed daily uniforms are as follows:

   • For boys, the uniform consists of a white polo shirt jack with MHSS logo on the pocket (worn over a white undershirt), navy blue pants, well-polished black low-cut leather shoes, and black socks.
   • For girls, the uniform consists of a white short sleeve blouse, navy blue skirt, well-shined black low-cut leather shoes, and plain white socks.
   • The PE uniform consists of a white with navy blue shoulder-round-necked t-shirt with Malayan logo printed on it, navy blue jogging pants for girls and shorts for boys, ordinary and inexpensive sneakers or rubber shoes, and white socks. This is worn only during PE classes.
   • The school identification card (ID) is also part of the uniform and must be worn by the student when inside school premises.
5. Good Grooming

   Hair should be kept neat and well groomed. Dyed or fancy hairstyle is not allowed. The prescribed hairstyle and haircut are as follows:

   • For boys, hair-length should be such that the hair does not touch the ears and does not reach the collar at the back.
   • For girls, any length as long as the hair is brushed away from the face.
   • Wearing faddish jewelry is discouraged. Boys are not allowed to wear earrings. Caps/hats, trinkets, and other distracting accessories must not be worn. Body piercing and tattoos are prohibited.
6. Prohibited acts within school campus

   The following acts are prohibited within the school grounds or at any other places where school activities are held:

   • 3.1 Possessing or drinking alcoholic beverages
   • 3.2 Possessing or using prohibited drugs or chemicals
   • 3.3 Bringing or playing card games or gambling in any form
   • 3.4 Inappropriate display of affection
   • 3.5 Use of obscene language (oral or written)
   • 3.6 Possessing deadly/dangerous weapons (firearms, explosives, or any bladed instrument) unless such is required for the purposes of study
   • 3.7 Recruiting/organizing/joining fraternities/sororities or any unauthorized organization

Suspension of classes due to inclement weather

The school follows the DepEd’s and the Manila city government’s pronouncements regarding suspension of classes during typhoons and other bad weather conditions.

1. Curricular and Extra–Curricular Activities
   • Co-curricular activities refer to programs and activities in support of instruction.
   • Extra-curricular activities refer to programs and activities of the recognized school clubs and organizations not directly related to academics.
   • In-campus activities refer to activities undertaken within the campus. Off-campus activities pertain to activities conducted outside the classroom/campus of Malayan High School of Science.

All co-curricular and extra-curricula activities must be endorsed by the year level coordinator or Student Council and its adviser for approval by the principal.

2. Application to Hold an Activity

   The co-curricular activities are pre-planned and calendared at the start of the school year. Extra-curricular activities require approval from the Principal/Administrator and as such must be applied for by the clubs and organization with the student activity coordinator (Student Council adviser). The application for the holding of extra-curricular activities must bear the following information:

   1. Title
   2. Nature
   3. Objectives
   4. Venue
   5. Starting date/time and ending date/time
   6. Provisions for transportation and accommodation ifnecessary
   7. Target students (year level and section) and estimated number of participants
   8. Total cost and per-student cost
   9. For a symposium/seminar, name of speaker (curriculum vitae if not known publicly)
   10. Student organization or names of students proposing the activity
   11. Teacher-in-charge
3. Restriction and Moratorium

   A moratorium on all activities shall be imposed seven days before any periodic or major examination day. Similarly, no activity shall be held when classes are suspended. Activities proposed to be held during Christmas or summer break must have prior approval of the principal.

4. School Service Vehicles/Parking

   The parking area inside the campus is for faculty, staff, and guests only. Students/drivers may park their vehicles in the outside parking area. School service vehicles and cars of parents driving and fetching their children to and from school may be allowed entry to the campus provided they have the MHSS car stickers.

   Although contracts for school service vehicle are made between the parents and the school service vehicle provider, rules established by these agencies are to be followed as though they were rules of MHSS. A student may be suspended from vehicle service for inappropriate conduct.

5. Dual Parent Reporting

   In the case of a student whose parents’ marriage has been dissolved or a separation of a parent from the home, the name and address of both parents should be on file. Unless otherwise decreed by a Court Order, information commonly provided to both parents of any student in attendance at MHSS (e.g., notices of school functions, progress reports, etc.) will be made available to both parents.

6. Hallway Pass

   Each homeroom will be issued two (2) hallway passes. A student who goes out of the classroom during class time should bear a hallway pass that is monitored by a homeroom officer.
